Let’s be honest. Sailor Moon is the magical girl anime. No “magical girl anime” list would be complete without Sailor Moon.

The main character, Usagi Tsukino is an average high-schooler. She’s clumsy and a total ditz, who always scores low on her tests, but she is very friendly. However, her whole life changes the day she saves a strange cat from danger. The cat, Luna, reveals that their meeting wasn’t chance: Usagi was to become Sailor Moon, and defend Earth from evil monsters sent by Queen Beryl, of the dark kingdom.

Listen, Ichigo Momomiya wanted her date with her crush to end in a better way than being knocked unconscious, after a hallucination of a cat flying into her happens. But wait, there’s more – now, Ichigo herself is displaying way more cat-like tendencies than she did before. She’s got cravings for fish, has amazing reflexes, and so much more.

It all comes to a head when she transforms into catgirl Mew Ichigo. She learns that she’d been injected with Iriomote Cat DNA in order to fight evil monsters that threaten the world. Thankfully, she’s not alone – there are four more girls in the same predicament. It’s trying to find them that’s the hard part.

Poor Sakura Kinomoto was an average ten-year old, going through her life, when one day she finds a book full of cards. Before she even figures out what these cards mean, they fly out of the book and scatter all over the world. The Beast of the Seal, Keroberos, tells Sakura that she let loose the Clow Cards, which all have incredible powers.

Now, it’s up to her to prevent a horrible catastrophe from taking place, all while trying to balance out her normal, ten-year-old self’s life.

Madoka Kaname was an ordinary 8^th grader at first. She and her best friend, Sayaka Miki were enjoying their average lives, when one day, they save a magical creature, named Kyuubey, from surreal creatures called Witches. In return, Kyuubey offers to grant them one wish of their choice – anything – but they’ll have to become magical girls and fight Witches.

However, the strange exchange student, Homura Akemi, was also there, and urged the girls not to take up the offer. Nothing is as it seems, after all. Surprisingly, Madoka Magica is dark. It ain’t as happy and fun-loving as the promos may try to tell you, but I’m told that it’s really good.

Amu Hinamori pretends that she’s cool and tough and can take on anything, but the truth is that she’s quite shy. One night, though, she makes a wish that she could be reborn as her confident self. The next morning, she finds three eggs on her bed that hatch into Ran, Miki and Su. They’re all Guardian Characters who try to help people form into their “true” selves.

Hinamori is gonna have a lot of things to deal with now!

Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro are two polar opposites. Nagisa is outgoing and friendly, but hates homework. Honoka is shy and nerdy, and loves learning. However, one day, a strange star shower was what united them together. The homeland of two guardians, Mipple and Mepple, has been conquered by evil forces from the Dark Zone.

Nagisa and Honoka are the only ones who can save them!

You thought Puella Magi Madoka Magica was the only Magical Girl anime that had deep, sad elements to it? Ha-haaaaaa, you ain’t seen piddly-SQUAT.

Yuki Yuna is always trying her best to do the right thing. Anyone who’s met her knows that. That’s why she and her best friend and sisters decide to take on the task of becoming magical girls to fight evil Vertexes. But it’s not all fun and games, now is it? There’s going to be some terrible stuff going on, and no one will be able to stop it from happening.

The gentle Ahiru is actually a duck. But that’s not abnormal, for in her world, she lives in a town of talking animals, such as cats and rabbits. One day, Drosselmeyer turns her into a human girl, and Ahiru learns the meaning behind her existence. Using her magical pendent, Ahiru can transform into Princess Tutu, and she sets out to collect the many pieces of the prince’s broken heart.

Utena Tenjou’s parents die all of a sudden, and a traveling prince comforts her. Utena vows to become a prince herself, to which the traveler left Utena a ring, promising he’d be able to see her again someday.

Now, a few years later, Utena is attending Ootori Academy. There, she’s drawn into the dangerous game where duelists with matching rings like Utena’s compete for the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya, and the powers she possesses. Utena wins Anthy, and realizes that if she wants to free Anthy and discover the secret of Ootori Academy, she needs to change the world.

Tiara is sent to recover the stolen Throne of Yord in the Guardian World, the home of mages. It’s the most powerful artifact of them all, so she has to hurry. She disguises herself as a normal high school girl, too. But wait, things are getting more complicated – as it turns out, the throne has been taken by her former lover, too!
